The name Fu Dogs is actually a western term for these beautiful ceramic sculptures. In Chinese history and culture Imperial Guardian Lions, are a powerful feng shui symbol for protection of the home. Fu Dogs were traditionally placed facing Imperial palaces, temples, and government offices. They were also a traditional feng shui symbol of household wealth and social status and were put facing wealthy homes. Fu Dogs are usually displayed in pairs. It’s intriguing to note that the lion isn’t an animal indigenous to China. So the story goes that travelers brought tales of lions as a Buddhist protector of Dharma, and statues of lions were modelled in feng shui following the forgeig travelers’ descriptions, and after the native dogs.
